What does an electric blanket cost to run?
Most cost between 1¢ and 3¢ an hour. Find the watts on the tag or the controller and check yours.
How it's worked out: watts ÷ 1000 × setting × hours × your rate. On lower settings the controller switches the heat on and off, so the average draw is below the tag rating. A plug-in power meter gives the exact figure.
Blanket or mattress pad?
A heated mattress pad goes under the sheet, so the heat rises into you and less is lost to the room. On the same setting it often feels warmer than a top blanket. A blanket is easier to wash and to move to the couch.
Safety checks before you buy
Look for a safety listing mark (UL or ETL), auto shut-off (most switch off after 8 to 10 hours) and a cord that unplugs for washing. Don't use one with a baby, on an adjustable bed it isn't rated for, or folded while it's on.
